Rigid casters do not swivel — the cart travels straight. In the classic two-swivel + two-rigid setup they give stability and tracking while the swivels steer.
Because a rigid bracket has no raceway, it carries more load and needs less force than the same-size swivel: heavy carts often run one swivel pair and a rigid pair.
